What is Psychosexual Therapy?

Many people ask me to explain psychosexual therapy.  In simple terms, psychosexual therapy is specialist form of counselling focused on issues related to human sexuality.  Other terms used to describe this specialist form of counselling are sex therapy, sexology, clinical sexology, psycho-sexology, sexual counselling, sexual health counselling.  It can be confusing.  These words are different titles for the same task.

Psychosexual therapy is a specialist therapy. A psychosexual therapist is a specialist in human sexuality. A psychosexual therapist is a counselling professional whether a counsellor or psychotherapist, a social worker, a psychologist or occupational therapist. Psychosexual therapists undertake specialist training after they initially qualify as a counselling professional.

Psychosexual therapy can assist everyone to have a healthy and pleasurable sex life.

Psychosexual therapy resolves sexual problems and issues by specifically addressing them. Psychosexual therapists have a greater understanding of human sexuality, including sexual anatomy, sexual and psychophysiological responses and sexual practices including kink and fetishes. As a psychosexual therapist I work with sexual and gender diverse people as well as people who engage in ethical non-monogamy (ENM) and poly relationships.  This specialist knowledge is above personal opinion or personal experiences. Psychosexual therapists learn about the varieties in human sexuality and variations in sexual response and activity. Sex therapist will work with other professionals (for example, medical practitioners, urologists, physiotherapist, and gynaecologists) when necessary to maximise the opportunities to achieve the best treatment outcomes for their clients.

A healthy life includes a healthy sex life.

Psychosexual therapy can assist everyone to have a healthy and pleasurable sex life.

Psychosexual therapists do not believe that sex will just fall into place for people, even when in relationship. My practice experience indicates this is not true. Singles and couples have attended therapy because they have realised sex is not like breathing, it not an activity which we do automatically.

A psychosexual therapist is comfortable discussing sexual topics with people in an open and professional manner.

A psychosexual therapist will listen to you in a non-judgemental way and assist you to explore the sexual issue or problem in professional therapeutic way. Psychosexual therapists are skilled in assisting people develop skills, tools and strategies to address sexual issues and develop ways to maintain a healthy sexuality. I will develop an individualised treatment plan for each person or relationship. This ensures I am meeting your needs in the best way possible using best methods to develop new strategies.

Sex therapy is a great way for you develop an understanding about your sexuality and how to express your sexual self in a healthy way. Always remember a healthy life includes a healthy sex life.
